The WFTU Denounces Workers Rights’ Violations of workers in #Qatar

On December 13th, The Ministry of Administrative Development and Labor and Social Affairs of Qatar, announced that the country’s authorities helped ten thousands of workers who were victims of labor rights violations to return to their countries. The authorities undertook to pay the cost of their airline tickets, without giving explanations about the nature of these violations.
This announcement came one day after the abolishment of Qatar’s labor “sponsorship system”, that forced foreign workers to seek their employer’s permission to change jobs or leave the country.
2.1 million foreign workers currently work in Qatar, coming from countries like Nepal, Bangladesh and India. Hundreds of thousands of them work as construction workers for the 2022 football World Cup, where numerous “accidents” take place because of appalling working conditions.
The World Federation of Trade Unions demands full compensation of all the victims of the violation of labor law that got injured at the building sites of Qatar or were forbidden to change job and leave the country and the punishment of all responsible persons.
We strongly condemn the conditions of modern slavery that governments impose to the workers in order to make exuberant profits by glamorous football events that take place in facilities built over the dead bodies of workers.
All workers must fight united, within the ranks of the class-oriented trade union movement, for decent life and working rights.
