The World Federation of Trade Unions, representing 92 million workers worldwide, strongly denounces the escalating policy of violation of trade union rights in Turkey cultivating to the arrest of the General Secretary of DISK.
Sister Arzu Çerkezoğlu was arrested at the Airport of Istanbul, Turkey on June 17th, 2016 planning to travel for a personal matter to Germany charged for having insulted the President Receb Tayyip Erdogan during a speech she delivered on August 31, 2015 in Diyarbakir.
The WFTU denounces the Government of Turkey for severe violation and repression of trade union freedom and expresses its solidarity with the working class and people of Turkey in their struggle for labour, social and democratic rights. Such acts aim to terrorize and weaken the workers and trade union movement. Instead such acts must be confronted by an even more organized, more determined and more class-oriented trade union movement.
